slime, slime layerБолее или менее толстые слои на наружной поверхности клеточных стенок многих микроорганизмов с высоким содержанием воды. В некоторых случаях слизь обильно выделяется в окружающую среду. Известный пример – бактерия Leuconostoc mesenteroides, которая быстро превращает раствор, содержащий сахар, в декстрановый студень, за что её на сахарных заводах называют «бактерией лягушачьей икры», другие примеры микроорганизмов, образующих большое количество слизи – Bacillus polymyxa, стебельковая бактерия Gallionella ferruginea, представители группы Azotobacter.
